Which gifts count towards my membership and benefits?
Any gift made in support of Michigan State Athletics. The following gifts are examples of contributions that count towards your Spartan Fund membership: Spartan Fund unrestricted gifts, gifts designated to any of our varsity sports, Spartan Marching Band gifts, seat premiums, gifts to capital projects, endowment gifts.
Are gifts that count towards my annual Spartan Fund donor level and/or my Spartan Points tax deductible?
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act amended Section 170(l) of the Internal Revenue Code to read as follows (in part): no deduction shall be allowed for any amount paid by the taxpayer to or for the benefit of an institution of higher education if “the taxpayer receives (directly or indirectly) as a result of paying such amount the right to purchase tickets for seating at an athletic event in an athletic stadium of such institution.” All gifts to MSU Athletics count towards your annual Spartan Fund donor level. All gifts to MSU count towards your Spartan Points. Your annual Spartan Fund donor level and Spartan Points provide priority status for seating at certain MSU athletic events. In light of the change in federal tax law and its potential impact on many of our donors, we strongly urge you to consult your tax advisor(s) or attorney(s) to determine the tax deductibility of each gift you make to MSU.
When is my Spartan Fund annual gift due each year?
By June 30. The Spartan Fund operates on a fiscal year from July 1st through June 30th. On July 1, new Spartan Fund memberships will be granted to individuals whose gifts are intended for Spartan Fund membership for the athletic season beginning in the upcoming fall. For example, if the total amount of your gifts from July 1, 2021-June 30, 2022 is $5,000 you will receive benefits at the Directors Club level for the 2022-23 athletic season.
When will I receive my membership renewal?
Spartan Fund renewal begins in early spring (March/April) followed by email reminders in May and June.
Are seat premiums tax deductible?
No. Following passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (which took effect January 1, 2018), any amount you pay to or for the benefit of MSU is not tax deductible if, as a result of paying such amount, you receive the right to purchase tickets for seating at an athletic event in an athletic stadium of MSU.
