FAQ's
How does the House Settlement and revenue sharing impact Michigan State Athletics?
This is a transformative change - a positive change. It's a good thing, first and foremost, for student-athletes, but also for college athletics as a model, and specifically for Michigan State athletics.
Opportunities have never been greater for student-athletes to benefit financially from their participation in college athletics. Michigan State is committed to distributing the full amount permitted to student-athletes. Beyond revenue sharing, scholarship limits have been removed, providing institutions the flexibility to provide more educational opportunities, and many of the other benefits previously provided to student-athletes will remain in place.

Which gifts count towards my membership and benefits?
Any gift made in support of Michigan State Athletics. The following gifts are examples of contributions that count towards your Spartan Fund membership: Spartan Fund unrestricted gifts, gifts designated to any of our varsity sports, Spartan Marching Band gifts, seat premiums, gifts to capital projects, endowment gifts.
Are gifts that count towards my annual Spartan Fund donor level and/or my Spartan Points tax deductible?
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act amended Section 170(l) of the Internal Revenue Code to read as follows (in part): no deduction shall be allowed for any amount paid by the taxpayer to or for the benefit of an institution of higher education if “the taxpayer receives (directly or indirectly) as a result of paying such amount the right to purchase tickets for seating at an athletic event in an athletic stadium of such institution.” All gifts to MSU Athletics count towards your annual Spartan Fund donor level. All gifts to MSU count towards your Spartan Points. Your annual Spartan Fund donor level and Spartan Points provide priority status for seating at certain MSU athletic events. In light of the change in federal tax law and its potential impact on many of our donors, we strongly urge you to consult your tax advisor(s) or attorney(s) to determine the tax deductibility of each gift you make to MSU.
When is my Spartan Fund annual gift due each year?
By June 30, Spartan Fund operates on a fiscal year from July 1st through June 30th. On July 1, new Spartan Fund memberships will be granted to individuals whose gifts are intended for Spartan Fund membership for the athletic season beginning in the upcoming fall. For example, if the total amount of your gifts from July 1, 2021 - June 30, 2022 is $5,000 you will receive benefits at the Directors Club level for the 2022-23 athletic season.
The football parking selection process will be June 5th - 7th to ensure season tickets and parking passes are delivered to donors in a timely manner. With an earlier football parking selection process, the deadline for those who have requested a football parking pass to establish Spartan Fund membership level and Spartan Points is May 1, 2023.
When will I receive my membership renewal?
Spartan Fund renewal begins in early spring (March/April) followed by email reminders in May and June.
When are my seat premiums due?
Football, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Ice Hockey, and Volleyball seat-related gifts are also due by June 30.
Please note, with an earlier football parking selection process and the Men's Basketball Seat Adjustment, the deadline to make contributions, including seat premiums, that effect Spartan Fund membership level and Spartan Points is May 1, 2023.
Are seat premiums tax deductible?
No. Following passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (which took effect January 1, 2018), any amount you pay to or for the benefit of MSU is not tax deductible if, as a result of paying such amount, you receive the right to purchase tickets for seating at an athletic event in an athletic stadium of MSU.
Can I make my contribution online?
Yes, donors can make their donations online here via your Go Green Account.
